Personality:
Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

Cloud, on the surface, appears to be a little aloof. To some he can come across as a little cold and uncaring. He doesn’t necessarily talk much and doesn’t show a wide range of emotions on his sleeve. Cloud often comes with sarcasm and quips on the tip of his tongue. Many times he appears level-headed and just wanting to get a job done. There have been more than a few people who just write off Cloud as a jerk and kind of an asshole at first. Eventually, though, if someone looks hard enough, they start to see through some of this to the person that just trying to hide his own awkwardness and difficulty in being able to actually communicate with others.

Below all of that, at his core, Cloud is actually a kind person. He’s the type of person that truly wishes to protect others and will put his own safety and dignity on the line. Cloud’s the type of person to have patience with Aerith’s antics even when others might not. The sort of person who doesn’t like to let people down or fail them. Within Cloud there’s a lot of confusion and guilt over the things that have transpired during the events of Crisis Core and in the original game. Whereas he had been shy and rather cheerful - wanting to become a hero like his idol - some of those things have been shelved but not necessarily the desire to do the right thing. He can still show that openness to others, even if it takes a little bit of time. Still awkward turtle though.

He struggles with his guilt a lot post original game and throughout Advent Children, but overcomes some of it or at least is more willing to move on.


What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

Loyalty is one of the primary factors that pushes Cloud into the events of the original game. Even though he and Tifa hadn’t been particularly close during childhood, he had still felt a need to at least help her, to be there for her. That, then, had started to extend to others like Aerith. Then for the other party members as well. Eventually he takes up the same cause - to stop Sephiroth and Shinra - of his own accord. It becomes his purpose over and over again.

Throughout Advent Children, Cloud had almost allowed his guilt over his previous failures ( or perceived failures ) to overtake him. Pushed himself away from the people he cares about and that care about him in return. This had ended when he realized that maybe what he needs to do is to forgive himself and let go of it. Though he doesn’t quite know how to do that, at least it’s something he can work towards. Cloud even asks if it’s possible to seek forgiveness and, after the response that he receives, that he is going to try. This is what gives him the strength to push on and to take on the Remnants and Sephiroth once more.

In fact, he states to Sephiroth that there’s nothing that he doesn’t cherish. So, perhaps, the ultimate thing that motivates Cloud is simply being able to protect everything that he can.


What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

There are many things that Cloud struggles with and, as mentioned above, the primary thing is guilt. He blames himself for Zack’s death and being unable to save Aerith. In fact, he even says “I let you die” to a vision of her. It’s these sorts of thoughts that had Cloud retreating from everyone that he had known. Cloud had grown to feel like he actually can’t do anything, that he can’t save anyone so why should a failure like himself try to do anything at all? That’s the sort of feelings that he had to work through.

For quite a while, Cloud also struggled with his own identity. This is a regret of his, not necessarily because of any fault of his own, but because of what it had led him to do. Because of his memories being all jumbled up and the various breakdowns, Cloud had started to feel like he hadn’t been a real person at all. He had, at one point, even begged for a number like the rest of the experiments. That desperation is what had given Sephiroth the ability to control him and Cloud handing over the materia for Sephiroth to summon meteor.

Also, have I mentioned that Cloud is kind of awkward? Like it’s difficult for him to build and maintain relationships awkward? Because he kind of is.


Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

Motion sickness! This game is going to be amazing for him because Cloud gets motion sickness. Oh right. He lost four years due to being in a tank. So much for developing much needed critical social skills, huh?

Limit Breaks: special techniques that are different from person to person. Cloud will have two available to him ( Omnislash Ver 5, Blade Beam ) though he has more. Omnislash Ver 5 utilizes all of Cloud’s fusion swords to attack a target with six powerful blows. Blade Beam launches a magical attack from his sword towards a target.

Cloud is a Paladin through and through. As they are more focused on defense and finding safe places for people to live, Cloud’s own goals and motivations more align with these traits. He’s more about protecting people and being able to take action against threats than he is going out and seeking adventure or anything like that. In a sense, he’s already been helping to work towards the current goal of his own planet, to rebuild and make it a better place for future generations.
